Seated Male

Seated Male

This figure was drawn using Oliver Grimley’s method of strict measurement. The chair, easel and subject are taped off, marking key locations of the pose, the fabrics, every detail is tightly tracked with tape and marks on the modeling stand and drawn with absolute precision. The figure is set up on the page with both vertical and horizontal cross hairs indicated by a series of tightly measured tick marks that establish landmarks up and across the figure over weeks of study. Once the measurements are certain then careful observation expands into the rest of the form. This tedious process was a great exercise that helped me hone my patience for drawing and sharp accuracy. I love this approach to drawing as a counter balance to the loose, expressive figures that allow me to capture animals in live study.
