Powerful Prey

Powerful Prey

Inspired by an ethereal moment where a new mother plated rhino demonstrated exquisite grace and awareness to her offspring. This direct wax construction was built in sheets formed over a newspaper armature, then modeled in warm layers of wax with layers established with a putty knife. Once completed, I severed the head into 14 fragments that were cast separately and welded together in bronze. Distortion in the metal required me to abandon the original, resolved form. This piece taught me about the value of creating a space for the material to influence the work.
